A growing, project-based services organization in Saskatchewan is seeking a CPA-designated Financial Controller to lead its accounting and financial reporting function.
This role offers the opportunity to assume full ownership of financial operations, implement robust internal controls, formalize accounting policies, and support executive leadership with high-quality financial reporting and analysis. The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening governance, improving reporting accuracy, and enabling long-term operational scalability.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Lead full-cycle accounting operations, including AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, and treasury.
- Independently manage the monthly close process and deliver timely, accurate financial statements.
- Prepare and review monthly accruals and balance sheet reconciliations (cash, AR/AP, payroll liabilities, GST/PST, credit cards, and WIP).
- Oversee year-end reporting and coordinate with external accountants and auditors.
- Manage corporate income tax, payroll remittances, and indirect tax filings.
Revenue Recognition & Project Accounting
- Implement and maintain earned-revenue recognition using a percentage-of-completion methodology.
- Calculate and reconcile WIP and unbilled revenue on a monthly basis.
- Ensure costs are accrued in the period incurred and aligned with project progress.
- Establish structured job-costing and project profitability reporting, including cost-to-complete and margin forecasting.
Internal Controls, Policies & Procedures
- Design and strengthen internal control frameworks appropriate for a contracting environment.
- Develop and maintain formal accounting policies (revenue recognition, WIP, accruals, payroll, expense classification).
- Create and institutionalize SOPs for billing, collections, AP, payroll, and month-end close.
Business Partnering & Treasury
- Prepare management reporting packages highlighting financial performance, risks, and trends.
- Support budgeting and forecasting in collaboration with operational leadership.
- Manage cash flow forecasting and banking relationships.
- Act as a key finance partner on systems implementations and process improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
- CPA designation (CA, CMA, or CPA) required and in good standing.
- 7–10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
- 5+ years in a senior accounting or Controller-level role.
- Demonstrated expertise in:
- Full-cycle accounting
- Month-end close and reconciliations
- Revenue recognition (percentage-of-completion)
- Work-in-progress accounting
- Job costing / project accounting
- Experience in construction, engineering, or project-based services environments strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards (ASPE or IFRS).
- Proven ability to design controls, document policies, and improve financial processes.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to partner with non-finance stakeholders.
Work Arrangement
- Primary location: Yorkton, Saskatchewan
- Hybrid arrangement available for candidates based in Regina, with frequent travel to Yorkton as required.
