What’s the role

Shell is seeking an Environmental Specialist – Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) and Land to join its team in Sarnia. The primary focus of this role is LDAR and land management. It coordinates 2–3 HSSE Technicians responsible for LDAR and will be rostered in the Emergency Operations Center. Reporting to the Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Manager within the Sarnia Manufacturing Centre (Refinery and Chemical Plant) HSSE Department, this position provides environmental regulatory, sustainable development, and technical support related to environmental matters. The role is responsible for environmental regulatory reporting for the site to meet provincial and federal requirements. It proactively supports the Sarnia Manufacturing Centre on environmental issues and drives continuous improvement of the site’s environmental performance. This position serves as the first point of contact with environmental regulatory bodies and liaises with departments to ensure awareness and compliance with management systems related to environmental standards. In addition, this position is on onsite role at the Shell Sarnia Manufacturing Center and offers the flexibility to work offsite for a couple days a week. Accountabilities
  • Accountable for the Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) program
    • Utilize the Integrated Activity Plan to create a monitoring schedule to assist the HSSE Techs to create LDAR routes
    • Verify instrument calibration and daily check compliance
    • Issue Government reporting at set schedules
    • Ensure the Techs are monitoring within regulatory requirements
    • Verify that the leaking components have been repaired within the regulatory timeline and ensure retests have been conducted
    • Coordinate with engineers and LDAR contractors to provide P&IDs and stream compositions for inventory development
    • Update procedures and enter database threats for emerging regulations to build changes in our processes
  • Accountable for Land regulatory requirements
    • Coordinate and review land farm financial assurance (letter of credit)
    • Update to Government in accordance with Land farm C of A
    • Provide consultant (WSP-Golder) with data and review report before submission
    • Responsible for Soil and Groundwater – Groundwater Monitoring Program Report
    • Conduct land farm sampling and reporting, and coordinate HSSE technicians for sampling
    • Perform bio-sludge waste tracking, monitor the bio-solids applied to land, and follow the waste protocol by entering data in Cority for reporting purposes
  • Other Responsibilities
    • Interpret and recommend actions to comply with environmental regulations, guidelines, standards, codes of practice, and corporate requirements
    • Work with teams to develop environmental positions to ensure compliance and generate best position for the site
    • Complete reporting for assigned focus area pursuant to regulatory requirements
    • Develop and maintain productive and positive relationships with government agencies
    • Review procedures and Management of Change documents to ensure environmental implications are understood and addressed
    • Act as focal for regulatory enquiries as they relate to LDAR and Land
    • Provide environmental training to Sarnia Manufacturing Centre staff
    • Execute ad-hoc tasks, activities and leadership activities to meet the needs of the asset
    • Serve as an on-call member of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) on a rotational basis
    • Manage multiple activities and tasks as well as conflicting demands while ensuring delivery of agreed to priorities and deadlines
What you bring
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • College or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or a related field
  • At least 3 years of environmental experience in refining, heavy industrial, petrochemical, or other large industries
  • Expertise in Canadian and Ontario environmental legislation related to LDAR and Land management is considered an asset
  • Excellent computer skills, with a strong focus on Excel applications and database management
  • Working knowledge of ISO 14001 requirements is considered an asset
  • Ability to work across multiple lines of business both within the Sarnia Manufacturing Centre and across Shell
  • Must have the ability to adapt and remain flexible when assigned to special projects or tasks
  • The role is an onsite local position, must be willing to relocate to Lambton County. Relocation assistance provided by Shell

The base salary range for this position is $92,600 - $139,000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.
