Job description
Overview

The Saanich Peninsula Hospital's (SPH) department of Emergency Medicine is hiring Emergency Medicine Physicians and locums for up to 30 shifts per month. SPH is a 65 bed acute care community hospital with an 18 bed emergency department (ED) that cares for 31,000 patients per year. SPH is the primary referral hospital for the Southern Gulf Islands, serving an approximate population of 87,000.

The ED is staffed by a dedicated, progressive, collegial group of 16 full‑time and part‑time emergency physicians, currently scheduled over 5 shifts per day with 12 hours of double coverage. Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Infectious Diseases, Palliative Care and Anesthesiology are available within the hospital during daytime hours, with numerous other Specialists in the community. Tertiary care support and consultants are 30 minutes away by road at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital. Laboratory services are 24/7, and Medical Imaging, including a CT scanner, operates 07:30–24:00 daily plus on‑call overnight. Physicians must be comfortable in a single coverage department without on‑site Respiratory Therapy or ICU support. Affiliation with the University of British Columbia’s Island Medical Program provides regular teaching opportunities to medical students and residents within the ED.

Qualifications

Applicants must be eligible for CCFP‑EM or FRCPC Emergency Medicine, and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. The group is actively seeking candidates with community hospital ED experience, flexibility in scheduling and availability to fill "crisis call in" volume and acuity work for the department.
