Day in the Life

Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Health and Safety, and working closely with the Emergency Measures Coordinator, the Emergency Measures Student will assist with the review of County and Municipal emergency management programs, hazard and high-risk analysis, critical infrastructure surveys, public awareness/education, and health and safety initiatives in accordance with requirements evolving from Provincial legislation, specifically the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.

The student will also be involved with and assist in emergency measures training and exercises for the County of Essex and other municipalities, as requested, while incorporating health and safety principles to ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations.

The Emergency Measures Student will spend their days
  • Assisting municipalities in the development, application, and review of hazard analysis models/templates and specific response plans.
  • Assisting in the identification of Municipal and County critical infrastructure.
  • Assisting with exercise planning and implementation initiatives.
  • Assisting in the ongoing development of a County Emergency Management Public Awareness Program.
  • Assisting with implementation and maintenance of information for various emergency measures projects and platforms.
  • Supporting health and safety initiatives related to emergency management, including risk assessments and safety compliance measures.
  • Participating in workplace health and safety audits and reporting potential hazards to enhance emergency preparedness and employee safety.
What We Are Looking For
  • Enrolment in a post‑secondary program in Emergency Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Business Continuity, Public Administration, Geography, Urban and Regional Planning, Health or Emergency Services, or a related field is considered an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Working proficiency in Microsoft Suite of products, including Outlook and Microsoft Access, as well as proficiency with GIS mapping applications.
  • Familiarity with Essex County is preferred.
  • Possess a valid “G” driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  • Must be returning to full‑time studies in September 2026.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety principles and workplace safety regulations is an asset.
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory criminal police clearance record and will be required to produce a valid driver’s license for a satisfactory driver’s abstract (obtained by the employer).
What We Are Offering
  • $24.85 per hour
