Electrical Designer – Street Lighting - Edmonton

What You’ll Do

As an Electrical Designer – Street Lighting, you will contribute to the planning, design, and documentation of street lighting systems for infrastructure and urban development projects. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will support the delivery of high-quality and cost-effective lighting solutions that meet client specifications and comply with relevant standards and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Documentation

  • Prepare conceptual and detailed designs for street lighting systems, including pole layouts, lighting levels, and circuiting.
  • Produce construction drawings, specifications, and design reports using industry-standard CAD and design software.
  • Ensure lighting designs comply with applicable codes, safety regulations, and sustainability goals.

Technical Coordination

  • Collaborate with civil, structural, and transportation engineering teams to integrate lighting designs into broader infrastructure projects.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical input to resolve design conflicts or field issues.
  • Coordinate with external stakeholders, including utility providers and municipal authorities.

Project Support

  • Assist in cost estimation, material take-offs, and procurement documentation.
  • Support project managers with scheduling inputs, progress reporting, and design deliverable tracking.
  • Contribute to quality control processes, including design checks and peer reviews.

Site Support & Inspections

  • Provide technical assistance during construction phases, including responding to RFIs and reviewing contractor submittals.
  • Perform site visits to assess existing lighting infrastructure and verify design implementation.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
    • Intermediate: 4–9 years of relevant experience
    • Senior: 10+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience in street lighting or exterior electrical design for infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with applicable lighting standards (e.g., IES, AS/NZS, or regional equivalents).
  • Proficiency in general electrical design and drafting software (e.g., AutoCAD, lighting calculation tools, GIS-based platforms).
  • Strong understanding of electrical distribution systems, load calculations, and photometric analysis.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills, with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
