Lead the Transformation of Child and Family Services in Nunavut!

This employment opportunity is open to all applicants. The Child and Family Services (CFS) system in Nunavut is undergoing essential transformation — with an urgent need for more responsive, coordinated, and culturally rooted care. As the Director, Family Wellness - Statutory and Strategic Initiatives ("Statutory Director"), you will lead that change. This integral role will shape frontline social work practice, inspire a skilled territorial team, and translate the vision of a stronger, community-led Family Services system into action.

Responsibilities
  • Lead key reforms as part of the Family Wellness Strategic Plan, strengthening documentation, improving social work practice, service delivery, and workforce development to build a trusted, culturally grounded system that protects children and supports families.
  • Represent Nunavut’s Child and Family Services at the national level, providing strategic oversight, leading risk and quality management efforts, and ensuring a more responsive, consistent, and culturally respectful system.
  • Oversee safety, support, and care of all children served through the CFS system in adherence to CFS legislation, standards, and procedures.
  • Provide strategic direction, policy and program guidance, quality assurance, risk management, and evaluation; develop and implement CFS standards, policies, and procedures; lead system planning and strategic initiatives; and direct research for system improvement.
  • Serve as the legal custodian for children in permanent care and as the temporary legal custodian for children in temporary care under CFS legislation.
  • Support staff through clinical mentorship, standards development, compliance, and continuous improvement in service delivery.
Leadership Principles
  • Pijitsirniq (Serving with purpose)
  • Pilimmaksarniq (Supporting growth and learning)
  • Aajiiqatigiinniq (Fostering collaboration and shared understanding)
  • Qanuqtuurunnarniq (Innovating to meet complex needs)
  • Avatittinnik Kamatsiarniq (Respecting relationships and interconnectedness)
Qualifications

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required typically include a recognized Bachelor of Social Work degree or related field, with at least five (5) years of work experience in child and family services and three (3) years of management experience demonstrating strong leadership, strategic planning, and team-building skills. A master’s degree in a related field is an asset. This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.

Languages and Cultural Competence

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any official language. Fluency in more than one official language is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut, and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also assets.

  • An eligibility list may be created to fill future vacancies.
  • Applicants may submit their resume in any Official Language of Nunavut.
  • Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
