Job description

The primary objective of the Director, East Operations is to provide effective leadership, direction and management in their assigned portfolio and to align regional operational goals with overall organizational objectives. Ensure the department meets company goals in internal (driver) and external customer service (Level of Service (LOS)), utilization, fleet (driver) service profitability and employee satisfaction. This is accomplished by focusing on human resource needs of the department and delegating effectively.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for all aspects of performance related to the division including: Service Levels, Empty Miles, Personnel, Equipment Management, Driver and Owner Operator productivity and Retention.
  • Building and maintaining highly effective teams through skilled recruiting, development, motivation and retention practices. Involves providing new and existing staff with the structure for day to day leadership, feedback, tools, training and support that are required to excel in their roles.
  • Ensuring company drivers and owner operators have clear expectations, policies and procedures as well as goals/programs
  • Ensuring the Operations Team operates at optimal efficiency in all aspects of generating and executing the day to day business.
  • Ensuring that all established programs, policy and procedure are adhered to as determined by the Executive. Any deviations to programs, policy and/or procedure must be communicated to the VP of Operations.
  • Involves day to day management, promotion and initiation of operational programs, and initiatives.
  • Involves ensuring day to day management of equipment by the development, monitoring and enforcement of programs involving equipment utilization.
  • Ensuring support and response is available for the day to day situations and/or issues that are part of an operations environment by being visible and accessible.
  • Due to the interdependent nature of departments and programs, the Director is to provide support, response and involvement in issues that affect Operations, including drivers and owner operators, by ensuring open lines of communication are maintained with other departments and sharing of information is encouraged.
  • Engage in other projects and activities as is necessary to the position and as assigned by the VP, Operations or the Executive.

  • 5-8+ years of experience leading people in a managerial role in a fast-paced and dynamic business environment.
  • Experience managing in the transportation/logistics industry.
  • Strong communication skills: excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • Excellent leadership ability, team management, interpersonal and employee development skills.
  • Progressive knowledge of the transportation industry including competition and trends.
  • Energetic and you love to put your fingerprints on a business.
  • Known for your sense of urgency and track record for strong business results.
  • Experienced in developing recommendations and strategies to overcome challenges and establish effective go-forward plans to meet your objectives.
  • Take initiative and make independent decisions while being approachable.
  • Motivated leader who empowers, mentors and takes pride in their team.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills able to manage multiple concurrent projects.
