Overview

New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) is committed to transforming lives and communities. Position Type: Regular

Location: Based at Fredericton Campus, with responsibilities across Smythe Street and other sites in the Fredericton area.

Salary Range: Custodian Lead ($22.94 per hour) and Storeskeeper ($24.14 per hour).

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED, with 3-6 years of custodial experience including some lead hand or supervisory responsibilities and 3-12 months of experience in shipping and receiving; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships across the organization.
  • Experience with safe handling and use of cleaning products, chemicals, and tools.
  • Familiarity with operating custodial machinery or specialized equipment (e.g., floor buffers); additional training may be required.
  • Experience working with biohazards or hazardous chemicals; related certifications may be required and must be maintained.
  • Physical strength and stamina, including the ability to stand and walk for extended periods, and lift/move items over 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • WHMIS training will be provided by employer.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

You will be reporting to the Facilities Manager and in this role, you will be expected to perform the duties of Custodian Lead (50%) and Storeskeeper (50%) within the designated hours of work.

Custodian Lead:

  • Overseeing a staff of Custodians engaged in cleaning and minor maintenance works. Performing inspection duties, instructing and leading custodial staff, helping to solve issues when needed, and assigning work tickets.
  • The Custodian Lead will keep the Facilities Manager apprised of any issues, hazards, risks or opportunities for continuous improvement as necessary.
  • Maintaining an assigned area in a clean and orderly condition in accordance with the required standards.
  • Requisitioning and maintaining cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Maintaining simple records and reports.
  • Coordinating of allied functions within NBCC. Typical examples of this are coordinating with the Maintenance Repair Worker Lead on events such as graduation or preparations for term start up.
  • Orientation of the facility with any new Custodians and basic training new custodian employees on equipment used, if required.
  • Snow removal and grounds work as required.
  • Recommending any training needs of staff to the Facilities Manager when needed.

You will be responsible for maintaining an assigned area in a clean and orderly condition. According to required standards, you will perform more difficult and specialized cleaning tasks. You will have the ability to make independent work decisions, while following established methods and work schedules.

Storeskeeper:

This is manual work involved in the tasks of receiving, storing, shipping, care and control of material.

Responsibilities include:

  • Receiving, unpacking, checking and recording receipt of goods manually as well as on computer systems.
  • Initiating requisitions for replenishing stocks.
  • Cleaning and maintaining assigned areas in a neat and tidy condition.
  • Performing related work as required.
  • Transporting of individuals, supplies, construction material, mail and refuse.
  • Loading/unloading of vehicles and performing the necessary manual operation in connection with material being hauled.
  • Maintaining simple records of quantities delivered and picked up.

Regular hours of work are based on a 40-hour work week. Additional overtime and weekend work may be required. This position will require shift work.

These job duties represent only the basic duties of the job. Related and allied duties may be assigned from time to time as they become necessary to the operation of NBCC.
