Job summary

A large not-for-profit senior community in Toronto is seeking a Cook 2 to prepare nutritious meals and ensure compliance with health regulations. The successful applicant will have a culinary management diploma or chef training, and two years of experience in quantity cooking. Shepherd Village is currently accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of Cook 2. You will work as part of a team to facilitate food production by preparing nutritious meals and snacks for residents, staff, and guests of Shepherd Village as well as Meals on Wheels Clients. Ensures Canada’s Food Guide requirements are met as well as Ministry of Health Compliance Standards, ORCA Standards and in accordance with Health Regulations and Sodexo Standards.

What You Will Work On

Reporting to the Supervisor, Food Services, the successful applicant will be expected to represent Shepherd Village in a courteous and professional manner, while maintaining amicable relationships with staff, Residents and their families, in keeping with our Corporate Values.

Responsibilities
  • Provide resident-focused care by respecting confidentiality and treating residents, staff, and visitors with dignity and respect at all times.
  • Comply with provincial long-term care regulations and dietary department policies to maintain high standards.
  • Prepare and serve menu items according to MOHLTC standards, Public Health Regulations, and dietary policies, ensuring accurate portioning, proper food temperatures, and timely service.
  • Follow strict food handling and safety protocols to reduce contamination risks, including hand washing, equipment sanitization, and correct use of utensils.
  • Assist in receiving, inspecting, and properly storing food supplies while monitoring quality and inventory rotation.
  • Maintain clean, sanitary, and organized work areas, completing scheduled cleaning duties and reporting supply or equipment needs.
  • Support food service operations by delivering food carts, assisting with special meal occasions, and participating in quality assurance and safety programs.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, volunteers, and management to ensure smooth kitchen operations and resolve any issues promptly.
  • Promote health and safety by adhering to Occupational Health and Safety standards, wearing personal protective equipment, and reporting hazards immediately.
  • Continuously improve knowledge of food preparation techniques, regulations, and best practices through ongoing training and education.
  • Any other duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Skills
  • Holds an approved chef training or culinary management diploma or certificate in Ontario or a certificate of qualification as a Cook under the Apprenticeship Program (Red Seal is preferred).
  • Two (2) years of previous experience in quantity cooking in similar settings.
  • Successful completion or enrolment in an approved Food Service Worker Training program
  • Successful completion of a Food Handler’s course offered by the Public Health.
  • Experience with large quantity food preparation preferably in a health care or long-term care setting.
