Job description
About the Role

We are partnered with a well-established, multi-disciplinary construction organization in the Waterloo area seeking a hands‑on, detail-driven Controller to support day‑to‑day financial operations while helping drive the next phase of the company’s growth. This is a pivotal role for someone who thrives in a fast‑paced, project‑based environment and enjoys balancing transactional oversight with meaningful financial analysis, operational support, and team leadership.

Reporting to the VP Finance, the Controller will oversee core accounting processes, strengthen month‑end and reporting workflows, and ensure financial accuracy across a high‑volume mix of institutional, commercial, industrial, and residential construction projects. With a new ERP system launching in January, the incoming leader will play a key role in optimizing data inputs, validating job‑level results from site teams, and improving financial visibility across the organization.

For a candidate who is hands‑on, analytical, and eager to build stronger financial tools and processes, this role offers the chance to make a significant operational impact while growing into broader FP&A, budgeting, and strategic financial responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including AP/AR, GL, invoicing, inventory, credit, and payroll oversight.
  • Lead month‑end close processes, ensuring accuracy, reconciliations, variance analysis, and compliance with internal controls.
  • Prepare financial statements and communicate insights, trends, and risks to senior leadership.
  • Support and enhance project/job costing, billing processes, and financial reporting dashboards.
  • Work directly with Project Managers and Site Supervisors to ensure job data integrity and timely financial inputs.
  • Help implement and optimize the ERP system, improving workflows and automation.
  • Oversee high‑volume project accounting across ~20 active projects and a fleet of 40+ equipment assets.
  • Assist with annual budgets, forecasting, KPI tracking, and long‑term planning.
  • Support internal controls, policy development, audit preparation, and tax coordination with external advisors.
  • Lead and coach a small finance team, fostering strong communication, workload management, and professional development.
Ideal Candidate Profile
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including corporate accounting, reporting, budgeting, and internal controls.
  • 2+ years of people leadership experience.
  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting or Business; CPA designation is required.
  • Experience in construction, project accounting, or other job‑costing environments is an asset.
  • Strong analytical and critical‑thinking skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with ERP systems (experience in implementation is an advantage).
  • Comfortable balancing strategic thinking with hands‑on execution.
  • Strong communicator who can collaborate across operations, project management, and leadership teams.
  • Adaptable, proactive, and solutions‑oriented – thrives in dynamic, growing environments.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
  • Join a stable, long‑standing construction organization known for its strong values, team culture, and commitment to quality.
  • Play a key role in the rollout and optimization of a brand‑new ERP system, helping modernize processes and improve operational visibility.
  • Make a meaningful impact across financial reporting, controls, job costing, and process improvements.
  • Work closely with an engaged VP Finance and senior leadership team that values transparency, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Competitive compensation package with benefits and RRSP matching.
  • Significant room for professional growth as the organization continues to scale.
