Position Summary

The Communications Technician is responsible for maintaining and coordinating all computer and network equipment for the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. This will include all computer/network infrastructure related hardware and software. The Full Time Communications Technician will also act as a technical resource for the members of the Police Service.

Minimum Requirements

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is seeking a pro-active, pragmatic professional to work with members of our organization. The successful candidate will have a post secondary diploma in computer technology or related field working with various information systems/networks, computers and software.

The main thrust of this position will be overall maintenance and coordination of our communication systems by in cooperation with the IT Manager and Communications Technicians. The full time technician will support the effective operation of computer, network and video systems. The technician will be able to respond to hardware/software problems, install and test hardware/software, as well as create and improve various databases and spreadsheets. The applicant should have experience with important business technologies such as Active Directory, Network routing, firewalls, Microsoft SQL server administration and maintenance. In addition, applicants should be familiar with Windows 11, Windows Security and other security software, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Exchange, Windows Deployment Services as well as VMWare.

Responsibilities
  • Appropriate maintenance, security and licensing of all inventory records, including licensing of all of the Service’s computer hardware, network, security and software applications.
  • Appropriately maintaining network security systems and reporting security concerns to the OPTIC security officer and the Support Services Inspector.
  • Liaising with appropriate persons or agencies to ensure network security is kept up to required standards of the OPTIC Security Committee and to ensure ongoing security system functionality.
  • Keeping updated on new technology in the field of networking and communications.
  • Installing and testing hardware and software required for new computer installations.
  • Responding to computer hardware problems including peripheral devices, determining the nature of the problem, coordinating the required repairs with local suppliers.
  • Responding to requests from users and assist them in getting the most of their computer resources and that computer hardware and software performance is optimized.
  • Installing and supporting communications equipment, including modems, mainframe cabling, personal computer cabling, and related items.
  • Provide liaison with Bell Canada and other suppliers regarding installation and maintenance of communication lines relating to computer/network infrastructure.
  • Liaising with suppliers and report to Support Inspector regarding new equipment and software required to establish and maintain networks and communications links.
  • Assisting where required regarding staff training on networks, personal computers, and related software.
  • Assisting with maintenance and effective operation of all 9-1-1 equipment, including telephone, computer, and radio components where these components form part of the computer/network infrastructure.
  • Reviewing all problems where the 9-1-1 system interacts with the computer/network infrastructure to identify concerns and correct problems as they arise.
  • Performing any other duties as assigned by supervisor.
