Overview

The Alberta Medical Association (AMA) is seeking a Communications Consultant, ACTT to join the Accelerating Change Transformation Team (ACTT). This is a temporary position until March 31, 2026, with a potential extension.

Pay range

Base pay range: CA$86,246.00 / yr – CA$112,121.00 / yr. The pay range is provided by AMA. Your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience — talk with your recruiter to learn more.

Work arrangement

The AMA supports a hybrid work environment. The successful candidate will be based out of Edmonton or Calgary and may work from home, with in-person attendance required as necessary. Regular travel throughout Alberta is required to attend meetings with physicians and government representatives.

Team overview

The Advocacy & Engagement team serves as internal consultants, helping AMA achieve its strategic and business objectives. Our areas of expertise include strategic communication planning, writing, design, publication management, digital communications and social media, website design and management, environmental scanning and event coordination.

Part of the Advocacy & Engagement team supports the ACTT grant deliverables and does not participate in advocacy efforts. ACTT is an AMA physician benefit program that supports physicians to create a high performing health system.

Position overview

The Communications Consultant plays a senior-level strategic role in planning and implementing communications for internal and external audiences. The consultant provides communications advice to staff in AMA branches, programs and external multi-stakeholder audiences.

Key Responsibilities
  • Works autonomously & in collaboration with the ACTT Leadership team while HR reporting to the Director, Member Engagement
  • Plays a senior-level strategic role in planning and implementing two-way communication for AMA-ACTT (boundary spanner)
  • Develops and executes strategic communications tactics to support ACTT priority deliverables
  • Provides strategic communication advice to in-house, initiative-driven teams and committees (expert prescriber role : acknowledged, informed, qualified to provide advice)
  • Provides strategic communication advice to external multi-stakeholder projects (upholds AMA interests)
  • Manages communications projects for ACTT
  • Handles calls / queries from team and physician members relating to ACTT matters; monitors and identifies opportunities and threats, notifies and / or provides advice to management accordingly
  • Environmental scanning in development of communications deliverables
Education and Experience
  • Graduate of a college or university program in communications or public relations.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a corporate or not-for-profit communications environment.
  • Experience should reflect measured results in successively more responsible projects and positions and the ability to deal with sensitive issues proactively in urgent situations.
