Job information
Position: Casual - Residential Care Worker (Direct Support Worker) I - U
Location: 180 Henry Ave – Front Desk (in person)
Status: Casual (on-call)
Hours per week: 0
Work schedule: Flexible to work when called to pick up shifts
Shift: 7:30 am – 3:30 pm; 3:30 pm – 11:30 pm; 11:30 pm – 7:30 am
Pay: $16.25 per hour per shift
Union: Position is unionized after 6 months of employment
Start date: asap
Note: Post internal and external for 5 days.

Job purpose
The Residential Care Worker provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors.
Responsibilities
- Monitor activities of clients/residents and provide personal, practical and morale support; may include safe storage and recording of prescribed medications
- Accurately record day-to-day happenings; maintain logbooks and complete occurrence reports
- Liaise with referral sources and external agencies as needed (e.g., welfare, police, urgent situations)
- Coordinate client care relating to security issues; may conduct random urinalysis and breathalyzer tests with clients, perform bed checks, ensure adherence to check-in times and curfews
- Perform property and grounds security inspections as required
- Handle admission, orientation and enforcement of house rules; may involve client discipline
- May handle finances related to room rentals and meal tickets
- May serve as reception for shelter
- May prepare or provide simple meals for clients/residents
- Perform other duties as assigned
Note: Not all incumbents perform all duties but perform a similar range of duties.
Required education & experience
- Minimum education: High school completion; up to six months of specialized courses (Addictions facilities) or equivalent experience
- More than three months but less than one year of related experience in frontline social services applicable to the role
- Experience in a residential or shelter environment preferred
Special licenses & certifications
- Addiction Facility – Addictions counselling courses (or equivalent)
- Precautionary measures: Universal precautions; Hepatitis B vaccination; TB vaccination; First Aid/CPR certification; Criminal Record Check; Non-violent crisis intervention training
- WHMIS training; Adult Abuse Registry Check; Child Abuse Registry Check; Use of protective gloves; Protective masks as needed
Physical & work environment
- Moderate keyboarding; walking/standing required
- Work environment may involve dealing with angry or abusive individuals; verbal abuse; isolation; shift-work affecting lifestyle
- May involve exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, sharp objects
- On-call duties; pager/walkie-talkie; some travel may be required
