Overview

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, BSSHL, the Assistant Controller is responsible for all day-to-day accounting and administrative processes for the Halifax office, as well as assisting the Group Finance team with ad hoc requests on behalf of the Butterfield Group.

  • Overseeing the end-to-end BSSHL Accounts Payable process in accordance with approved procedures and controls to ensure appropriate documentation is obtained with required approval.
  • Completing the monthly / quarterly / yearly accounting close process, including all journal entries, reconciliations, SOX processes and reports for the jurisdiction and the management team.
  • Preparing monthly financial variance reports and assisting the CFO, BSSHL with annual budgets and ongoing financial forecasts.
  • Liaising with management, vendors, and other departments to resolve issues and support policy compliance.
  • Preparing all regulatory reporting and requirements within the timelines provided.
  • Demonstrating strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet very stringent deadlines.
  • Recommending, drafting, and implementing changes to ensure efficiency in processes and practices of BSSHL Finance.
  • Assisting with the external audit, including the preparation of audit working paper files.
  • Completing special projects and ad-hoc reporting as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in Business Administration / Commerce, CPA or CPA candidate, and a minimum of three years of relevant experience.
  • Strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with high ethical standards and ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize tasks in a busy work environment.
  • Demonstrates customer service and relationship management skills.
  • Knowledge of accounting standards and systems, and willingness to continue learning.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, etc.).
