Job Description
The Assistant Coach will work with the Head Coach and associated Technical Staff to support all technical, tactical, and performance-based components of NSL pre-season, regular season, tournaments, and all additional Halifax Tides FC first -team activities. As the first ever Women’s Professional Soccer league and club in Canada, this role will be central to shaping on-field standards, competitive identity, and the long-term performance of the club.
The Assistant Coach will embody and demonstrate the values of Halifax Tides FC in all environments, within the team, across the NSL, and among partners including Canada Soccer and FIFA.
Position Expectations
Player Development & High-Performance Support
- Collaborate with the Head Coach to create and implement individualized development plans, addressing technical, tactical, physical, and psychological components.
- Conduct small-group or unit-based sessions that support player profiles and positional requirements.
- Lead or assist in 1-on-1 and small-group video review sessions to enhance learning, clarity, and tactical understanding.
- Provide constructive real-time feedback, helping players understand how technical actions and tactical decisions affect team performance.
Training & Tactical Preparation
- Assist in planning and executing all training sessions, ensuring alignment with the team’s tactical framework, playing style, and performance standards.
- Translate tactical principles (in possession, out of possession, transitions, and final third actions) into practical training activities.
- Support on-field coaching with strong session design, detail-oriented coaching points, and high-level execution.
- Assist with session logistics including field setup, phase progression, and activity transitions.
Match Preparation, Analysis & In-Game Support
- Help prepare match-specific strategies, scouting reports, and tactical plans for all competitions.
- Provide real-time support during matches, identifying tactical trends, momentum shifts, and opportunities for adjustment.
- Utilize video analysis and performance data to inform game plans, evaluate opponents, and assess individual and team performance.
- Participate in post-match review processes to identify learning points and integrate them into upcoming training cycles.
Performance Analysis & Technical Tools
- Use platforms such as Hudl, Sportscode, or other analysis tools to generate actionable performance insights.
- Connect data metrics to player development, helping players understand how statistical outputs relate to behaviours on the pitch.
- Collaborate regularly with performance analysts to integrate video, data, and tactical insights into session design and match preparation.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Maintain strong communication with the Head Coach, other assistant coaches, performance staff, analysts, and medical staff regarding player readiness and development.
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary high-performance environment.
- Contribute to a culture of accountability, professionalism, connection, and continuous improvement.
Compliance, Administration & Standards
- Ensure adherence to all Halifax Tides FC, NSL, Canada Soccer, and FIFA rules and policies.
- Maintain updated and organized training plans, player evaluations, and development notes.
- Support talent identification processes and contribute insights regarding potential signings or developmental players.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of team operations and success.
Position Specific Qualifications
- Canada Soccer “B” License (or international equivalent), or currently enrolled and working toward completion.
- 5+ years of progressive coaching experience at the professional, collegiate, National Team, or elite academy level.
- Demonstrated experience in player development with the ability to design and implement high-quality, detailed training sessions.
- Strong understanding of tactical frameworks and the ability to translate them into effective on-field training.
- Proficiency in video analysis tools and performance technology.
- High emotional intelligence, strong communication skills, and an ability to build positive, trusting relationships with players and staff.
- Proven discretion and ability to manage confidential information.
- A willingness to pursue continued education, development, and coaching pathway progression.
Work Environment
- Primary role is in-person at Halifax Tides FC facilities and match locations.
- Must be able to work extended or irregular hours, including matchdays, weekends, and holidays.
- Role includes work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and prolonged standing.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel (national and international).
- This role includes standing for extended periods, field work in varying weather conditions, and occasionally lifting objects up to 50 pounds.
