Apex Wind Energy Substitutes Inc. is developing technology to enhance wind energy efficiency and adaptability. Mohawk will convert the existing surface model into a parametric model utilizing Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) standards within North America. Once the updated model is approved by Apex, a scaled prototype will be manufactured utilizing a common scaling factor to fit within the build limitations of Mohawks additive manufacturing equipment and commonly available bearings. The prototype will then be tested by Apex to validate its alignment with their simulations data. It is anticipated that due to the tolerances of the AM process, 2-3 prototypes will need to be produced to ensure the best chance of alignment.
Under the direction of the General Manager, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Coordinator main mandate is to provide applied research support focusing on technical tasks for the proper completion of The Apex Wind Energy SONAMI project.
The Advanced Manufacturing Research Coordinator will serve as technical support and interact with Apex, students, and Faculty members to conduct and support project tasks. The incumbent will serve as a technical resource proficient in developing the prototype needed in this project. The incumbent will assist with design, manufacture, and test a wind turbine. Specific to this project the turbine is 0.5m in diameter, so careful planning needs to be done in consideration as the largest printer can only print 0.35m; therefore, the part needs to be modular so it can print in pieces and assembled afterwards.
The incumbent will act as a hands-on resource supporting the project, assist the research team lead and the Project Manager in the coordination of a range of applied research activities, through outreach to business and liaison with faculty and staff for project development and clients/suppliers relationship.
