Job Description: Essentia Health is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as Director of Physician and Provider Recruitment. In this role, you will guide strategy, lead a high-performing team, and partner with senior leaders to ensure Essentia attracts and retains top physician and advanced practice talent.
Education Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in business, Human Resources, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is required.
- A master’s degree (e.g., MBA, MHA) is preferred.
- Professional certification in HR or talent acquisition (e.g., SHRM-SCP, SPHR, AAPPR) is a plus.
About the Role: Director, Physician and Provider Recruitment
The Director of Physician and Provider Recruitment will be a strategic and transformational leader. Reporting to the Senior Director of Physician and Professional Services, and as a member of the office of Chief Medical Officer, this leader will not only manage the full-cycle recruitment of physicians and advanced practice professionals (APPs) but will also serve as a trusted business partner to Essentia Health's senior leadership and clinical teams. The ideal candidate will leverage data and market intelligence to drive proactive workforce planning, enhance the provider experience, and ensure Essentia Health attracts and retains top-tier clinical talent.
The Opportunity: Evolving to a Talent Advisory Model
Essentia Health seeks an innovative and results-oriented Director of Physician and Provider Recruitment to lead a pivotal transformation of its talent acquisition function. This is more than a recruitment leadership role; it is an opportunity to redefine how Essentia Health finds, attracts, and integrates clinical talent. The Director will be a change agent, building a team and a strategy that proactively supports Essentia's growth, strategic goals, and commitment to patient care.
As a talent advisor, the Director will:
- Move Beyond Transactional Recruitment: Shift the team to become a strategic partner in workforce planning. This involves anticipating future talent needs, identifying market trends, and advising clinical and operational leaders on talent strategies that align with business objectives.
- Leverage Market Intelligence: Use data, analytics, and competitive market insights to inform decisions. The Director will develop robust dashboards to track key performance indicators (KPIs) like time-to-fill, cost-per-hire, and retention rates, providing transparent and actionable insights to leadership.
- Build a Proactive Pipeline: Transition to a highly proactive approach, building and nurturing a continuous pipeline of qualified candidates. This includes strengthening relationships with residency programs, fellowship directors, and professional associations, as well as optimizing digital and direct-sourcing strategies.
- Enhance the Candidate and Provider Experience: Champion a seamless, professional, and personalized candidate journey from initial contact through onboarding. This includes collaborating with HR, Credentialing, and Legal teams to streamline processes and ensure a positive, welcoming experience for new providers.
- Develop the Team's Capabilities: Mentor and coach the recruitment team to evolve, develop, and grow in their profession. This will involve equipping them with capabilities that include consulting with stakeholders, interpreting market data, and effectively managing relationships to drive better outcomes.
- Serve as a Strategic Business Driver: Demonstrate the direct impact of the recruitment function on Essentia Health's strategic priorities, including financial performance, patient access, and clinical quality. This involves articulating the value of talent acquisition as a core business function rather than a support service.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute a comprehensive recruitment strategy for physicians and APPs that is fully integrated with Essentia's workforce planning and growth goals.
- Team Management: Lead, mentor, and develop the provider recruitment team, fostering a culture of accountability, data-driven decision-making, and continuous improvement.
- Stakeholder Partnership: Build and maintain strong, credible relationships with executive and clinical leadership, serving as a trusted advisor on all talent-related matters.
- Operational Excellence: Oversee all aspects of the full-cycle recruitment process, ensuring efficiency, compliance, and best-in-class candidate experience.
- Performance Analytics: Utilize metrics and dashboards to monitor recruitment effectiveness and provide regular, data-driven updates to senior leadership.
- Brand Ambassador: Represent Essentia Health at key recruitment events and professional forums to enhance the organization's provider brand and network.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with HR, Provider Compensation, Legal, and other departments to streamline processes and ensure a coordinated approach to provider engagement and retention.
Required Experience and Knowledge
- Progressive Leadership: A minimum of eight years of experience in healthcare, talent acquisition, or provider recruitment, with at least three to five years in a leadership role responsible for team management, resource allocation, and financial oversight.
- Strategic Acumen: Demonstrated success in designing and executing recruitment strategies that align with broader organizational goals.
- Data-Driven Mindset: Proven ability to leverage data, analytics, and market intelligence to drive decisions and improve recruitment performance.
- Operational Expertise: Strong knowledge of full-cycle recruitment processes, including sourcing, interviewing, contracting, and onboarding, within a complex healthcare environment.
- Compliance and Regulation: A solid understanding of employment law, credentialing, and the unique dynamics of the provider workforce.
- Relationship Builder: Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with a track record of building trusted partnerships with executive leaders, physicians, and staff.
