Wood is recruiting a Lead Technical Safety Engineer to strengthen our team in Dubai, UAE with occasional site trips to Basra, Iraq.

About the role

Lead Technical Safety Engineer to strengthen our team in Dubai, UAE. The role requires occasional site trips to Iraq if required by the client.

Our Clients and Projects

EPC Project involves the upgrade of produced water, wash water, and fire‑fighting systems across all the Rumaila degassing stations. This project will deliver compliant, reliable systems through a combination of repair, upgrade, and replacement activities, aligned with the client’s strategy.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of Technical Safety & Loss Prevention engineering methodologies, software systems, and design practices as they relate to FEED, detail design, construction, commissioning, and plant start‑up.
  • Perform safety screening of project scopes.
  • Hands‑on experience of conducting Hazardous Area Classification, safety layout assessment, emergency escape route assessment.
  • Experience in fire engineering activities such as fire zone determination, firewater demand calculations and firewater network hydraulics.
  • Participating and preparing reports for project HAZOP, HAZID, SIL studies and other safety workshops when required.
  • Able to perform Physical Hazard Effects (PHE) modelling and review Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA).
  • Experience in conducting F&G mapping.
  • Co‑ordinating with other disciplines during all stages of design development, construction, pre‑commissioning and start‑up.
  • Providing technical support to site as required.
  • Producing and reviewing specifications, data sheets, schedules, study reports and design calculations; ensuring they conform to engineering quality, competence and project management systems.
  • Attend client meetings and communicate issues with lead engineer as required.
  • Ensure self‑awareness of relevant regulatory framework, legislation changes, initiatives and industry technology developments.
  • Thorough awareness of international codes and standards.
  • Actively maintain own competence according to standards and pursue continuous professional development.
  • Must be willing to make occasional visits to Iraq.
Expected
  • BEng or equivalent with relevant experience.
  • Chartered Engineer or recognised equivalent experience preferred.
  • Experience of concept, FEED, detail engineering project phases.
  • 15+ years relevant experience in the oil and gas industry.
  • Previous experience of working in the Middle East would be an advantage.
  • Experience in flare systems design is a must.
  • Candidate shall have strong knowledge and experience using the following software packages (FlareSim, DNV Phast).
