The Senior Electrical Engineer will participate with and frequently lead key aspects of projects as part of T&D (transmission & Distribution) project teams consisting of members from various groups and disciplines across a number of areas within Kirby Group Engineering and externally.
In conjunction with the PM and project QS, the Senior Electrical Engineer will be responsible for all aspects of T&D projects from initial tendering, through contract award, detailed design, site installation, commissioning, energisation and successful handover.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Identify, undertake and manage key detailed design tasks
- Initiate and manage the sub‑contracting of specialist design studies
- Ensure that technical issues are identified and resolved without delay
- Review quotations for the supply of material to confirm adequacy and technical suitability
- Be aware of, manage and mitigate commercial risk to the company
- Process internal procurement from equipment enquiries, requisitioning and monitoring manufacture through to delivery to site whilst maintaining a comprehensive audit trail
- Prepare technical submittals for approval to the client, coordinating inputs from other parties where required
- Work with the project PM, civil engineer and QS to prepare sub‑contract packages
- Attend and record regular supply chain and project progress meetings to ensure that progress is monitored and maintained within the overall construction programme
- Liaise with the project team and supply chain to ensure correct operation of the plant on site and successful handover
- Monitor and record project progress against the construction programme
- Compare tender drawings to construction drawings and advise of any changes
- Work closely with the relevant PM to ensure that all variations are notified to the project QS
- Ensure that the client’s management tools are updated as set out in the contract documentation
- Prepare and hand over all relevant documentation in the form of a safety file at the end of each project
- Undertake testing, fault investigation, diagnostic activities and rectification of faults within your competence
- Provide technical support and direction, within your competence, to Kirby T&D project team members, including the application of technical standards
- Work with the project team to prepare design risk assessments as required contractually and under legislation and provide technical input, where required, of method statements and all aspects relating to health & safety on site
- Promote a positive safety culture and safe working environment
- Review and manage the project from inception to handover with the wider project team
- Undertake regular meetings with the supply chain and client to maintain progress and ensure resources are matched to the project delivery programme
- Develop the project‑specific quality plan
- Mitigate project risk commercially to protect the company’s exposure to risk
- Ensure that health & safety, environmental & quality procedures are followed and adequate records are maintained
- Prepare the project close‑out report in liaison with the project manager
- Review with the project manager the allocation of resources and general progress, motivating the project team
- Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with the client and other external stakeholders
- Act as ambassador with any stakeholders involved in the project
- Meet and exceed contractual requirements, delivering on time, safely and to the highest quality
- With the commissioning team develop a project‑specific commissioning plan, amending as required following input from the client or system operator
- Attend commissioning & energisation coordination meetings as required
- Provide technical support and address faults in coordination with external parties, where required
- Report progress and any problems to the Kirby management team as appropriate
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Experience at a public electricity utility is highly beneficial
- 3rd level qualification in Electrical Engineering
- Minimum of 8 years engineering design / project management experience on industrial installation projects
- Professional and commercial acumen, capable of representing Kirby at a senior level in meetings
- Detailed understanding of HV and LV network requirements in industrial settings, with particular emphasis on resilience and studies requirements
- Experience with energy management systems and integration of automated control systems to electrical networks
- A proven track record of delivering projects on time and to budget
- Experience of managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with impact
