Disabled American Veterans (DAV) seeks an NSO Apprentice to begin a structured training path toward becoming a National Service Officer, assisting veterans and families with disability claims and benefits through VA and other agencies. The program emphasizes on-the-job learning and comprehensive preparation under supervision.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be eligible for VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Service participation.
• Must be a DAV member in good standing.
• Knowledge of legal/medical terminology preferred.
• Understanding of business/administrative procedures and records management.
• Valid driver's license preferred.

Responsibilities

• Acquire and maintain knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to veterans benefits.
• Learn to conduct detailed interviews of veterans to elicit information for identifying benefits.
• Review service records and medical data to identify/assess claims.
• Determine if additional evidence is needed and advise accordingly.
• Assess risks/benefits of filing a claim.
• Practice preparing submissions to initiate/advance claims.
• Monitor progress of a claim and communicate with VA adjudicators.
• Advise claimants on appeal options and provide guidance where requested.
• Represent claimants before hearings and boards when required.
• Develop goals and plans to manage workload efficiently.
• Communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders.
• Recruit new DAV members to support DAV's mission.
• Perform other administrative and outreach tasks as directed by supervision.
