Job summary

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) is seeking an NSO Apprentice to begin the path toward becoming a National Service Officer. The role includes on-the-job training to represent veterans and their families pursuing disability benefits from the VA and other government entities.

You will learn to interview veterans, review records, assess claims, and prepare submissions while coordinating with VA adjudicators and potentially assisting with appeals. Nationwide relocation may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma (or equivalent) required.
• Eligible for VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment services under DAV's On-The-Job Training Program for National Service Officers.
• Must be a member in good standing of the DAV.
• General knowledge of legal/medical terminology preferred.
• General understanding of business/administrative procedures and records management helpful.
• Valid driver's license preferred.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and record systems/databases.

Responsibilities

• Acquire and maintain knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to veterans benefits.
• Conduct detailed interviews with veterans to elicit information for identifying all potential benefits.
• Review service records and medical data to assess claim validity and potential claims.
• Advise on evidence needed and potential bases of appeal.
• Prepare submissions to initiate and advance disability claims.
• Monitor progress of claims and interact with VA adjudicators to advance outcomes.
• Advise claimants on appeal options when needed.
• Represent claimants before hearings and VA panels, presenting evidence and arguments.
• Recruit new DAV members to support the DAV's mission of service.
• Perform outreach and administrative duties as directed by the office supervisor.
