Job summary

Disabled American Veterans in Winston-Salem, NC seeks an NSO Apprentice to begin the on-the-job training program to represent veterans pursuing disability benefits and other services with the VA and other agencies.

The role focuses on learning laws and regulations, interviewing veterans, reviewing records, and advising claimants on potential benefits and appeals; travel may be required, and relocation nationwide may be needed to support DAV's mission.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be eligible for VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Service under the National Memorandum of Agreement for DAV's On-The-Job Training Program.
• Must be a member in good standing of the DAV.
• General knowledge of legal and/or medical terminology preferred.
• General understanding of business/administrative procedures and systems such as managing clientele files and records, cash ledgers, and quality customer service is helpful.
• A valid motor vehicle driver's license (preferred).
• Functional user of standard business computer, Microsoft Office software suite, and various computerized record systems/databases.

Responsibilities

• Acquire and maintain knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to veterans benefits.
• Learn how to conduct detailed interviews of veterans to elicit information for identifying benefits.
• Review service records and medical records to assess claims.
• Advise claimants on evidentiary requirements and appeal options when appropriate.
• Assist in preparing submissions to initiate and advance claims and monitor progress of claims.
