Job summary

Disabled American Veterans seeks an NSO Apprentice to undergo on-the-job training to represent veterans pursuing disability claims and benefits from the VA and other entities. The role includes interviewing veterans, reviewing records, and preparing submissions to advance claims.

Apprentices will train under supervisory National Service Officers, with opportunities to learn adjudication processes, appeal options, and client outreach while relocating nationwide as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Eligible for VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Services under DAV On-The-Job Training Program except where hiring a non-eligible candidate serves a DAV business need.
• Must be a member in good standing of the DAV.
• General knowledge of legal/medical terminology preferred.
• Basic familiarity with business procedures and MS Office is helpful.

Responsibilities

• Acquire and maintain knowledge of veterans benefits laws and regulations.
• Learn to conduct detailed interviews with veterans to elicit information for identifying potential benefits.
• Review service and medical records to assess claim validity and required evidence.
• Prepare submissions to initiate and advance claims, including briefs and related documents.
• Monitor progress of claims from submission to resolution and liaise with VA adjudicators.
• Advise claimants on administrative and judicial appeal options when appropriate.
• Represent claimants before military and VA hearing panels and boards as needed.
• Recruit new DAV members to support the organization’s mission.
