Job summary

American Traveler is hiring a Medical Surgical RN for a renal med/surg unit requiring 1 year of experience and GA or compact RN licensure.

The role focuses on renal patients in a hospital setting with an anticipated 1:5-6 nurse-to-patient ratio on a 49-bed unit. Day shifts are 7:00 AM–7:00 PM, with every other weekend and floating as needed. Epic EMR and Pyxis are used; SBAR communication is standard practice.

Qualifications

• Active GA or compact RN license required.
• BLS certification required.
• Minimum 1 year of RN experience required.
• Epic charting experience required.
• Community hospital experience preferred.
• Experience with renal failure and pre/post hemodialysis management preferred.
• Skills in respiratory care (BiPAP/CPAP, chest tubes, high flow nasal cannula, oxygen) preferred.
• IV therapy skills (central line blood draws, PICC line management, phlebotomy) preferred.
• Wound care/wound vac and isolation precautions/PPE preferred.
• Telemetry monitoring and rapid response/code team protocols preferred.
• Medication administration experience with Heparin, Insulin, PCA preferred.

Responsibilities

• Medical Surgical unit with a focus on renal patients within a hospital setting.
• Adult to geriatric patient population.
• Patient ratio of 1:5-6 on a 49-bed unit with an average daily census of 48.
• Day shift schedule, 3x12-hour shifts from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
• Every other weekend required unless otherwise specified.
• Floating required within facility and scope of practice as needed.
• No on-call requirements.
• Uses Epic EMR (required), Pyxis, and SBAR communication.
• First-time travelers are accepted, though charge nurse experience is requested.
• Navy blue scrubs required.
• Maximum RTO of 7 days per contract, finalized at time of submission.
• Holiday coverage required based on number of major holidays falling within the assignment period.
• Full compliance required to start on time.
• Local candidates accepted at the same rate.
• Prior permanent, per diem, or internal staff must be separated from all facility locations for one full year before returning as a traveler.
• Returning travelers who were previously cancelled or not approved to return must complete one successful assignment elsewhere before reapplying.
