Job summary

Compass Housing Alliance in Seattle is seeking a part-time Program Assistant for the Blaine Veterans Center, a 24-hour shelter for male-identifying veterans. You will observe, record, and respond to guest activity, maintain a safe, trauma-informed environment, and support the program services team.

You will assist with meals and activities, engage residents to assess needs, and refer to services. The role requires strong communication and teamwork in a fast-paced shelter setting.

Qualifications

• At least 1 year of experience in a social/human service setting.
• Fluent reading, writing and understanding of English.
• Experience addressing housing instability, mental health, substance use, or related issues is preferred.
• Ability to work in fast-paced environments with crisis situations.
• Ability to communicate with diverse populations effectively.
• Degree in human/social services or related field is a plus.
• WA Food Handlers Permit preferred; sponsorship possible if not current.

Responsibilities

• Provide trauma-informed monitoring to ensure safety and comfort for guests, residents, and staff.
• Mediate conflicts and apply de-escalation and crisis intervention as needed.
• Support program activities, meals, and participant tasks like laundry or group activities.
• Engage guests to assess needs and provide information and referrals.
• Respond to issues as directed by program management; report needs to management.
• Monitor security cameras, patrol building, and check doors/windows; investigate complaints.
• Log actions and incidents; enforce rules; communicate with Program Coordinator and Manager.
• Control after-hours front door access and maintain safety procedures per policy.
• Perform light janitorial tasks and follow safety guidelines.
