Job summary

UNC Health is offering a Student Nurse Extern I position at the Hillsborough Campus serving the Chapel Hill area. The extern will work with an RN partner within the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice to gain hands-on clinical exposure.

The role provides routine patient care, learning opportunities, and orientation-to-discharge support across a range of departments in a hospital setting.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Currently enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months of the start date.
• Nursing Assistant I licensure with North Carolina DHHS.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report significant changes to a RN or provider.
• Assist patients and families with admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide care/treatments per plan of care including vital signs, measurements, specimen collection, wound care, and basic patient support.
• Deliver direct personal care for activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation).
• Perform indirect care duties (cleaning, stocking, equipment transport, clerical tasks).
• Reinforce patient teaching and confirm understanding with patients.
• Assist providers with routine exams/procedures and equipment during emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, support environment and patient safety as directed.
