Job summary

UNC Health Care Hillsborough Campus is seeking participants for the Student Nurse Extern I program (May 24 – July 31, 2027). You will work with an RN partner, perform patient care under supervision, and gain hands-on experience in a hospital setting.

The externship emphasizes foundational nursing education, with roles within the Nursing Assistant I scope, under supervision, and aims to prepare students for registered nursing positions.

Qualifications

• Fluent in verbal and written English.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in patient care.
• Basic computer skills.
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs.
• Frequent to continuous standing/walking.
• CPR certification may be required.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes to a nurse or provider.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide care/treatments per plan of care including vital signs, measurements, specimens, wound care, catheter care, glucose checks, and ROM exercises.
• Provide direct personal care for activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation).
• Provide indirect care such as cleaning, stocking, and clerical tasks.
• Reinforce patient teaching and ensure understanding.
