Job summary

UNC Health Care is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I (SNE I) for the Hillsborough Campus. You will work under the RN partner to support patient care within the Family Medicine unit, gaining hands-on experience in a hospital setting.

The externship runs May 24 – July 31, 2027, with a 36-hour work week and duties ranging from admissions assistance to direct patient care, under supervision. Training emphasizes safe, patient-centered care and learning in a clinical environment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Nursing Assistant I certification by NC DHHS.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Fluent in English (verbal and written).

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report significant changes to a nurse or provider.
• Assist with admissions, hospital orientation, and discharge.
• Provide care including vital signs, measurements, wound care, catheter care, glucose checks and simple treatments.
• Assist with activities of daily living and direct personal care.
• Support unit operations: cleaning, stocking, transport of supplies and equipment.
• Assist with examinations and procedures and procurement of equipment during emergencies.
