Job summary

UNC Health Care Hillsborough Campus is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I in a 36-hour work week, onsite in Chapel Hill. You will work with an RN partner to provide direct patient care under supervision, learning essential nursing skills in a supportive environment.

The extern will observe and document patient information, assist with admissions and discharges, and perform routine care tasks within the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Currently enrolled in a prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with NC DHHS.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes to the RN or provider.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Provide direct patient care per plan of care, including vital signs, measurements, and routine activities of daily living.
• Provide indirect care tasks: cleaning, stocking supplies, equipment sterilization, and assisting with new employee orientation.
• Reinforce patient teaching and document patient understanding.
• Assist in examinations and procedures and procure equipment during emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, assist with behavior support and ensure patient safety.
