Job summary

UNC Health Care System seeks a Student Nurse Extern I to join the Family Medicine unit at the Hillsborough/Chapel Hill area. You will work under an RN partner to assist with admissions, care delivery, and discharge activities within a patient-centered team environment.

The externship is designed for prelicensure nursing students, offering hands-on exposure to vital signs, specimen collection, basic care, and safety-focused practices in a hospital/clinical setting.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Currently enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Nursing Assistant I listed with NC DHHS and BLS certification are required.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report significant changes to a nurse or provider.
• Assist with admissions, orientation, and discharge planning for patients in the clinical setting.
• Provide care including vital signs, measurements, specimen collection, wound care, glucose checks, and activities of daily living.
• Assist with routine examinations, procedures, and equipment needs under RN supervision.
• Support patient and family education as directed by nursing staff and reinforce instructions.
