Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an experienced Staff Engineer to lead transmission/ Distribution projects ranging from 13.2kV to 500kV underground; interface with utility clients and multiple offices across North America to deliver feasible, cost-effective designs.

The role emphasizes QA/QC, routing analyses, and the preparation of construction packages while mentoring junior staff and contributing to business development efforts. Full-time, on-site with travel.

Qualifications

ABET-accredited degree in Civil Engineering or related field with 3 years transmission engineering experience, consulting preferred.
Alternative: ABET-accredited Civil/related Eng Technology with FE exam completed and 3 years of transmission engineering experience, consulting preferred.
Master's degree in Civil Engineering with 2 years transmission engineering experience, consulting preferred.
Strong knowledge of standard civil/structural engineering techniques and procedures.

Responsibilities

Lead design teams of 2–10 engineers and designers; coordinate with construction, procurement and permitting teams.
Interface with utility clients and collaborate with multiple offices.
Develop new clients and maintain relationships with existing clients across North America.
Support business development, conference attendance, marketing, and internal initiatives.
Prepare distribution and transmission construction packages for underground projects (manhole, conduit, duct bank, feeder, cables).
Develop routing analyses for low- to high-voltage transmission using CAD/GIS tools.
Conduct route studies, cost estimates, and confirm construction feasibility.
Perform field inspections and measurements on overhead and underground facilities.
Use simulation software to evaluate scenarios and present client recommendations.
Produce reports/visualizations communicating technical results and trends.
Ensure deliverables meet client expectations and QA/QC guidelines.
Perform QA/QC reviews of studies and design packages.
Prepare calculations and assist with equipment specs (cable pulling, voltage drop, pole loading).
Prepare proposals, cost estimates, and execution schedules.
Provide leadership and mentoring to junior staff.
Engage with clients/subcontractors and external personnel as needed.
