Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Newton, MA is seeking a Staff Engineer for underground transmission projects, leading design teams of 2–10 engineers and collaborating with construction, procurement, and permitting. The role involves routing analyses, feasibility studies, and client-facing reports to support project execution and business development.

The ideal candidate has 3+ years in transmission engineering (ABET-accredited BS, FE or MS with related experience) and strong CAD/engineering software

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited BS in Civil Engineering with 3 years of transmission engineering experience.
• Or a Bachelor's Degree in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 3 years of transmission engineering experience.
• Or a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering and 2 years of transmission engineering experience.
• Strong knowledge in standard civil/structural engineering techniques and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work analytically and solve quantitative problems.
• Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
• Strong computer skills (AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCAD).
• Engineers in Training (EIT) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead design teams of 2 to 10 engineers and designers and work with construction, procurement, and permitting teams on underground projects.
• Develop routing analyses for distribution and transmission lines using CAD/GIS tools.
• Prepare calculations and assist with equipment specs like voltage drop and pole loading.
• Prepare proposals, cost estimates, and execution schedules.
• Provide leadership and mentorship to less experienced staff.
• Interact with clients and subcontractors and ensure client satisfaction.
