Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Senior System Protection Engineer to join our Grid Services team in the US. You will lead protection philosophies and studies for transmission and substation projects, and support P&C design with substation teams.

You will configure protective relays, manage protection data in Powerbase, and assist with commissioning activities, RFIs, and field questions. A strong background in NERC/IEEE standards and vendor tools is required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program (or equivalent).
• 7+ years of experience in system protection engineering for transmission/substation projects.
• Hands‑on responsibility for relay settings and protection studies.
• Experience with protection philosophies for line, transformer, bus, and capacitor/reactor protection.
• Experience performing fault studies and relay coordination with CAPE/ASPEN or equivalents.
• Proficiency with SEL AcSELerator, EnerVista, and other major OEM relay software.
• Experience using Powerbase or similar relay/asset databases.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and application of protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, and capacitor banks.
• Perform short‑circuit analysis, relay coordination, and time‑current curve development.
• Configure, set, and troubleshoot microprocessor‑based protective relays using vendor software.
• Manage relay records and documentation in Powerbase and ensure change management alignment.
• Review P&C design documents (one‑lines, three‑lines, schematics) with substation teams.
• Support commissioning, field questions, and fault investigations; ensure compliance with standards.
