Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Senior System Protection Engineer to join our Grid Services team. You will lead protection philosophies and studies for transmission and substation projects, and support P&C design with substation teams.

You will configure and troubleshoot protective relays, manage protection data in Powerbase, and assist with commissioning and field energization, while ensuring compliance with IEEE/ANSI/NERC standards and client requirements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program (or equivalent).
• 7+ years in system protection for transmission/substation projects with hands‑on relay settings.
• Background in protection philosophies and relay logic for line/transformer/bus protection.
• Experience with CAPE and/or ASPEN protection analysis tools.
• Proficiency with SEL AcSELerator, EnerVista, and other OEM relay software.
• Experience with Powerbase or similar relay/asset databases.
• Ability to read one‑lines, three‑lines, schematics, wiring/logic diagrams.
• Familiarity with IEEE/ANSI/NERC/PRC standards for protection and control.
• Strong written and verbal communication with clients, manufacturers, and field teams.
• Proven leadership of project portions and multidisciplinary coordination.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, and capacitor banks.
• Perform short‑circuit analyses and relay coordination studies.
• Configure and troubleshoot microprocessor relays with vendor software.
• Manage relay records and settings in Powerbase.
• Support event analysis and misoperation investigations.
• Develop P&C design documents with substation teams.
• Provide protection requirements and markups for design.
• Support commissioning and field energization.
