Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Senior System Protection Engineer to join our Grid Services team. You will lead system protection studies, configure relay settings, and review P&C designs for high‑voltage transmission projects.

You will work with utility clients, equipment manufacturers, and commissioning teams to ensure compliant protection schemes and reliable operations. The role emphasizes Capex and field support, with hybrid work three days in-office and two remote days, and a relocation

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• 7+ years of experience in system protection engineering for transmission and/or substation projects.
• Hands-on responsibility for relay settings and protection studies.
• Experience with CAPE and/or ASPEN or equivalent protection analysis tools.
• Experience with relay configuration tools such as SEL AcSELerator and EnerVista; familiarity with OEM software.
• Experience using Powerbase or similar relay/asset databases.
• Ability to read P&C drawings: one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring and panel layouts.
• Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI and NERC/PRC standards; strong communication with utility clients and teams.
• Experience leading portions of projects and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Perform system protection studies including short-circuit analysis and relay coordination.
• Develop and verify protection settings using CAPE/ASPEN or equivalent tools.
• Configure, set, and troubleshoot microprocessor-based protective relays with vendor software.
• Use Powerbase or similar databases to manage relay records and settings.
• Support event analysis, misoperation investigations, and scheme adjustments.
• Develop and review P&C design documents with substation teams (one-lines, three-lines, wiring diagrams).
• Provide protection requirements and markups for P&C design and field commissioning.
