Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Lead System Protection Engineer to join our Grid Services team. You will lead protection philosophies, settings, and studies for transmission and substation projects while supporting P&C design and field commissioning.

The role requires 10+ years in system protection, strong communication, and experience with CAPE/ASPEN and OEM relays. A hybrid work arrangement applies with relocation options based on location.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET-accredited).
• 10+ years in system protection engineering for transmission/substation projects.
• Strong background in protection philosophies, settings, and relay logic.
• Experience with CAPE/ASPEN or similar protection analysis tools.
• Proficiency with relay configuration tools (SEL AcSELerator, EnerVista, other OEM software).
• Experience with Powerbase or similar protection data databases.
• Ability to read and interpret P&C drawings (one- and three-lines, schematics).
• Knowledge of IEEE/ANSI/NERC/PRC standards; strong written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

• Lead protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, breakers, and capacitor banks.
• Perform short‑circuit analysis, relay coordination, and time‑current curve development.
• Configure and troubleshoot microprocessor relays using vendor software.
• Manage relay records and documentation in Powerbase or equivalent.
• Support protection event analyses and misoperation investigations; recommend settings or scheme adjustments.
• Develop and review P&C design documents in coordination with substation teams (one-/three-lines, schematics).
• Support commissioning and field energization; review relay test plans and RFIs.
