Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Senior System Protection Engineer to lead protection philosophies, relay settings, short‑circuit studies, and time‑current analyses for high‑voltage transmission and substation projects. You will configure microprocessor relays, manage relay data in Powerbase, and verify protection schemes against IEEE, ANSI, and NERC/PRC standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• 7+ years of experience in system protection engineering for transmission/substation projects.
• Hands-on responsibility for relay settings and protection studies.
• Strong background in line/transformer/bus protection philosophies.
• Experience with CAPE/ASPEN or equivalent protection analysis tools.
• Proficiency with SEL AcSELerator, EnerVista, or other major OEM relay software.
• Experience with Powerbase or similar relay/asset databases.
• Ability to interpret P&C drawings: one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring/logic diagrams.
• Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, and NERC/PRC standards.
• Strong written and verbal communication; able to coordinate with utility clients and construction teams.
• Proven project leadership and cross-disciplinary coordination.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and application of protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, and capacitor banks.
• Perform system protection studies: short‑circuit analysis, relay coordination, and time‑current curves.
• Configure, set, and troubleshoot microprocessor‑based relays using vendor software.
• Use Powerbase to manage relay records and align data with client standards.
• Support event analysis and misoperation investigations with relay data interpretation.
• Develop and review P&C design documents (AC/DC one‑lines, three-lines, wiring/logic diagrams, panel layouts, BOMs).
• Provide system protection requirements and markups for P&C design.
• Support commissioning and field energization, including RFIs and question resolution.
• Adhere to client standards, NERC PRC requirements, IEEE/ANSI standards, and good utility practice.
