Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Senior System Protection Engineer to lead protection philosophies, relay settings, and power system studies for transmission and substation projects. The role includes reviewing P&C design, coordinating with substation teams, and ensuring compliance with IEEE/ANSI/NERC standards.

The position offers a hybrid work arrangement (three days in the office, two remote) and a potential relocation package depending on location.

Qualifications

• ABET‑accredited Electrical Engineering degree.
• 7+ years in system protection for transmission/substation projects.
• Strong background in protection philosophy for line, transformer, bus, breaker failure, and capacitor/reactor protection.
• Experience using CAPE and/or ASPEN for fault studies and relay coordination.
• Proficiency with relay configuration tools: SEL AcSELerator and EnerVista.
• Experience using Powerbase or similar relay/asset databases.
• Ability to check and interpret P&C drawings: one‑lines, three‑lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts.
• Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, and NERC/PRC standards related to protection and control.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with utility clients, equipment manufacturers, and field teams.
• Proven experience leading portions of projects with cross‑functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and application of protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, and protection systems.
• Perform short‑circuit analyses, relay coordination, and time‑current curve development.
• Configure, set, and troubleshoot microprocessor‑based protective relays using vendor software.
• Use Powerbase or similar databases to manage relay records and documentation.
• Support event analysis, misoperation investigations, and recommend settings adjustments.
• Review P&C design documents (AC/DC one‑lines, schematics, wiring diagrams) with design teams.
• Provide protection requirements and markups to guide P&C design (CT/VT ratios, trip logic).
• Support commissioning and field energization, including RFIs and field questions.
