Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Senior Substation Engineer to lead design of high-voltage substations, specifying general arrangement, grounding, and AC/DC systems. You will mentor junior engineers, coordinate with clients, and drive QA/QC across projects.

Remote work is possible within the United States with hybrid options near listed office locations; candidates should bring 7–10 years in substation physical design and a ABET-accredited engineering degree.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• 7–10 years of experience in Substation physical design engineering.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Excellent document management and organization skills.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; team collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Design power utility substations utilizing applicable codes and client standards (if available).
• Prepare general arrangement, equipment and electrical layout, elevation views, trenching, grounding, conduit drawings, BOM, and AC/DC power systems.
• Design ground grids based on codes using industry software.
• Design lightning protection and grounding plans.
• Perform AC/DC load, bus spans, and ampacity calculations.
• Create equipment and material specifications for procurement and cost estimates.
• Develop conceptual designs and facility planning layouts.
• Prepare documentation to support procurement, construction, and operation/maintenance.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, vendors, and contractors to ensure project success.
• Lead client meetings and site visits to collect data and present solutions.
• Lead QA/QC processes and provide design package approvals.
• Mentor junior engineers and review calculations, drawings, and specs.
