Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Substation Physical Design Engineer III to lead the design of high-voltage substations. You will develop code-compliant solutions, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with clients and cross-functional teams from concept through construction.

The role supports remote work within the United States with preferred hybrid candidates near listed offices. You’ll influence project outcomes while upholding safety, quality, and reliability standards in a dynamic utility

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• 4–7 years of Substation physical design engineering experience.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Excellent document management and organization skills.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Design power utility substations utilizing applicable codes and client standards (if available).
• Design ground grids based on applicable codes utilizing industry software.
• Design lightning protection and grounding plans.
• Complete calculations such as AC and DC load, bus spans, and ampacity calculations.
• Create equipment and material specifications for procurement and develop design scope and cost estimates.
• Complete conceptual designs and layouts for facility planning studies.
• Prepare documentation to assist procurement, construction, and operation/maintenance of systems.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, vendors, and contractors for project execution.
• Participate in client meetings and job site visits to collect data and present engineering solutions.
• Ensure QA/QC processes, including technical review and approval of design packages.
• Provide mentorship and oversight to junior engineers and designers.
