Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Principal Substation Engineer to lead design efforts for high‑voltage substations, mentoring junior engineers and driving technical excellence from concept through construction.

The role emphasizes code-compliant engineering, client collaboration, and cross‑functional teamwork to deliver reliable power infrastructure. Remote work is possible from within the United States, with preference for hybrid arrangements near listed office locations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
• 15+ years of experience in substation physical design engineering.
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Excellent document management and organization skills.
• Strong attention to detail and quality.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Team-oriented with the ability to interact professionally with clients and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Design power utility substations following applicable codes and client standards.
• Create general arrangement, equipment layout, elevation views, grounding, cable trench, and power systems drawings.
• Design ground grids and lightning protection plans.
• Perform load, bus span, and ampacity calculations.
• Develop equipment specifications and cost estimates for procurement.
• Produce conceptual designs and layouts for facility planning studies.
• Prepare documentation to support procurement, construction, and O&M activities.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, vendors, and contractors.
• Lead client meetings and site visits to collect data and present solutions.
• Lead QA/QC processes and technical design package approvals.
• Mentor junior engineers and reviewers on calculations, drawings, and specs.
