Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Senior Substation Physical Design Engineer to lead high‑voltage substation design, mentor junior engineers, and drive technical excellence from concept through construction.

You will design general arrangement, equipment layouts, grounding, protection, and perform critical calculations while coordinating with clients and cross‑functional teams to ensure project success and safety.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering.
• 7–10 years of experience in Substation physical design engineering.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Excellent document management and organization skills.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Design power utility substations utilizing applicable codes and client standards.
• Develop general arrangement, equipment layout, elevation views, cable trenching, grounding, conduit drawings, BOMs, and AC/DC systems.
• Design ground grids based on codes using industry software.
• Create lightning protection and grounding plans.
• Perform load, bus span, and ampacity calculations.
• Prepare equipment specifications and cost estimates for procurement.
• Develop conceptual designs and facility layouts for planning studies.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, vendors, and contractors.
• Lead client meetings and site visits to gather data and present solutions.
• Ensure QA/QC compliance and conduct technical design package reviews.
• Mentor junior engineers and review calculations, drawings, and specifications.
