Job summary

Affirm is building its own bank and seeks a Senior Software Engineer to own core banking systems, data platforms, and operational tooling in a small, AI-native team. You will lead end-to-end delivery, drive AI-enabled automation, and manage vendor relationships, with exposure to bank leadership.

You will partner with Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Internal Audit from day one, shaping the architecture and runbooks to stay exam-ready while maintaining a lean, fast-moving engineering culture.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of software engineering with end-to-end ownership through launch and operations.
• Ability to move quickly in ambiguous environments while maintaining quality and governance.
• Bias toward simplicity in design and implementation for a lean, high-bar team.
• Fluent with AI-assisted development tools and agentic workflows to boost output.
• Experience with public cloud (AWS preferred), IaC (Terraform), and data platforms.
• Direct work in regulated environments with examiner-facing documentation and audits.
• Strong written and verbal communication to explain complex concepts to executives and non-engineers.

Responsibilities

• Own bank systems end-to-end: design, build, integrate, operate, and respond to incidents.
• Raise team effectiveness by elevating code review standards and documentation.
• Ship AI-first features and leverage AI tools to improve velocity and quality.
• Manage one or more vendor relationships end-to-end for banking tech stack.
• Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Internal Audit from day one.
• Maintain operational posture with monitoring, runbooks, and audit-ready practices.
• Communicate strategy and tradeoffs to non-engineering stakeholders; influence cross-team decisions.
• Mentor and grow junior engineers as the team expands.
