Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Senior System Protection Engineer to join our Grid Services team. You will lead protection philosophies, settings, and studies for transmission and substation projects, while supporting P&C design and field commissioning.

The role requires ABET‑accredited Electrical Engineering and 7+ years of experience in system protection engineering. Hybrid work arrangement with three days in the office; relocation support may be available depending on location.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
• 7+ years of experience in system protection engineering for transmission and/or substation projects.
• Strong background in protection philosophies and relay logic.
• Experience with CAPE and/or ASPEN for protection studies.
• Proficiency with relay configuration tools (SEL AcSELerator, EnerVista, other OEM software).
• Experience using Powerbase or similar databases for protection data management.
• Ability to read and interpret P&C drawings (one‑lines, three‑lines, schematics, wiring, diagrams).
• Knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, and NERC PRC standards and good utility practice.
• Strong written and verbal communication and ability to coordinate with clients, manufacturers, and field teams.
• Proven experience leading portions of projects and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and application of protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, and capacitor/reactor banks.
• Perform short‑circuit analyses, relay coordination, and time‑current curve development.
• Configure, set, and troubleshoot microprocessor‑based protective relays using vendor software.
• Manage relay records and configuration data in Powerbase and align with client standards.
• Support event analysis and misoperation investigations and recommend settings or scheme changes.
• Review P&C design documents (AC/DC one‑lines, three‑lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts).
• Provide system protection requirements and markups for P&C design, including CT/VT ratios and interlock logic.
• Assist with commissioning and field energization, review relay/test plans, and respond to RFIs.
