Job summary

Sargent & Lundy seeks a Senior System Protection Engineer to join our Grid Services team in a hybrid role. You will lead protection philosophies, settings, and studies for transmission and substation projects, coordinating with design and commissioning teams.

The role requires 7+ years in system protection, expertise with CAPE/ASPEN, and strong communication with clients and equipment manufacturers. A relocation package is available based on location.

Qualifications

• ABET‑accredited Electrical Engineering degree.
• 7+ years of system protection engineering experience for transmission/substation projects.
• Hands‑on responsibility for relay settings and protection studies.
• Strong background in protection and relay logic (line/transformer/bus/capacitor).
• Experience with CAPE and/or ASPEN or equivalent protection tools.
• Experience with Powerbase or similar relay databases.
• Ability to read and interpret P&C drawings (one‑lines, three‑lines, schematics).
• Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, and NERC/PRC standards.
• Strong written and verbal communication; ability to work with utility clients and manufacturers.
• Proven experience leading portions of projects with cross‑functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and application of protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, and capacitor/reactor banks.
• Perform system protection studies: short‑circuit analysis, relay coordination, and time‑current curves.
• Configure, set, and troubleshoot microprocessor‑based relays using vendor software.
• Use Powerbase to manage relay records and configuration data.
• Support event analysis and misoperation investigations; provide recommendations.
• Develop and review P&C design documents (AC/DC one‑lines, schematics, wiring, panel layouts).
• Provide system protection requirements and markups for P&C design (CT/VT, trip/close logic).
• Support commissioning and field energization; review test plans and respond to RFIs.
