Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Senior System Protection Engineer to join our Grid Services team. The role focuses on protection philosophies, relay settings, and power system studies for high-voltage transmission and substations. You will review P&C designs, support commissioning, and ensure compliance with IEEE/ANSI/NERC standards.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited EE degree required.
• 7+ years in system protection engineering for transmission/substation projects.
• Experience with CAPE/ASPEN or equivalent protection analysis tools.
• Proficiency with relay configuration and settings tools.
• Ability to interpret P&C drawings: one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, logic diagrams and panel layouts.
• Familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, and NERC/PRC standards.
• Strong written and verbal communication with utility clients and teams.
• Proven project leadership and coordination experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, breakers, and capacitor/reactor banks.
• Perform protection studies: short-circuit analysis, relay coordination, and time-current curves.
• Configure, set, and troubleshoot microprocessor relays using vendor software.
• Use Powerbase to manage relay records and configuration data.
• Support event analysis, misoperation investigations, and recommendations.
• Develop and review P&C design documents: one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts.
• Ensure protection schemes comply with client standards, NERC PRC, IEEE/ANSI, and good utility practice.
• Support commissioning and field energization, including RFIs and field questions.
