Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Senior System Protection Engineer to lead protection philosophy development, protection studies, and P&C design reviews for high‑voltage transmission and substations. The role includes configuring and troubleshooting relay systems, managing protection data, and supporting commissioning with utility clients and construction teams.

Ideal candidates have ABET‑accredited BSEE, 7+ years in protection engineering, and proficiency with CAPE/ASPEN and OEM relay tools.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited BSEE or equivalent.
• 7+ years of system protection engineering experience.
• Experience with relay settings and protection studies.
• Familiar with CAPE/ASPEN or equivalent protection analysis tools.
• Proficiency with SEL AcSELerator, EnerVista, or other OEM software.
• Experience using Powerbase or similar relay databases.
• Ability to read one-lines and schematics (P&C drawings).
• Knowledge of IEEE/ANSI/NERC/PRC standards.
• Strong communication with clients, manufacturers, and construction teams.
• Experience leading portions of projects.

Responsibilities

• Lead the development and application of protection philosophies and settings for transmission lines, transformers, buses, and capacitor/reactor banks.
• Perform protection studies including short-circuit analysis, relay coordination, and time-current curve development.
• Configure, set, and troubleshoot microprocessor-based protective relays using vendor software.
• Manage relay records and configuration data in Powerbase and ensure alignment with client standards.
• Support commissioning, field energization, and RFIs related to protection and control.
• Develop and review P&C design documents (one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring/logic diagrams).
• Provide protection requirements and markups (CT/VT ratios, burdens, interlocks, communications).
• Ensure compliance with IEEE/ANSI/NERC/PRC standards and good utility practice.
