Job summary

SmithRx is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to drive backend design and implementation for our health-tech platform. You will lead architectural decisions, guide API design, and promote best practices across the team. Remote, US-based, with a strong emphasis on scalable systems and mentorship.

You will collaborate with cross-functional partners to deliver high-quality software, influence technical roadmaps, and help scale our product suite as SmithRx grows rapidly.

Qualifications

• BS or advanced degree in computer science or applicable field.
• 8–12 years of software development experience on server-side applications and API servers.
• Experience at a high-growth startup is a plus.
• Expertise in a compiled language such as Go, Java or Kotlin is required.
• Proficiency with PostgreSQL, including schema design, SQL tuning, and database monitoring.
• Demonstrated experience designing and implementing scalable APIs; strong understanding of design patterns and testing best practices.
• Working knowledge of GraphQL APIs, CI/CD, AWS, Docker and Kubernetes is a plus.
• Positive, team-first attitude with ability to work independently and handle ambiguity.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain back-end features and architecture for the SmithRx product suite.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable software and services.
• Provide scope and risk estimates and create technical design documentation.
• Apply software development best practices, patterns, testing, and automation.
• Leverage AWS technologies (Lambda, Fargate) for batch processing.
• Troubleshoot production issues and perform root cause analyses to prevent recurrence.
• Coach and mentor junior engineers through code reviews and feedback.
• Work with leadership to translate technical vision into a quarterly roadmap.
• Foster a collaborative learning culture and explore new technologies.
