Job summary

SOLV Energy seeks a Design Engineer II, Substation to own preliminary substation design for utility-scale solar and BESS projects. This fully remote role supports BD kickoff through handoff and requires a BS in electrical engineering with 3+ years of substation experience.

You will review requirements, develop the 10% design, and coordinate with estimating, procurement, and engineering teams while ensuring IEEE/NEC/NESC compliance. Travel up to 10% may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent from an accredited institution.
• Minimum 3+ years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD or ETAP and familiarity with substation design software.
• Strong knowledge of IEEE, NEC, and NESC standards and utility interconnection requirements.

Responsibilities

• Own the first-pass preliminary substation design approach for pursuits and projects.
• Review client documents to identify requirements, risks, and scope outside SOLV standards.
• Serve as SME for assigned projects and coordinate inputs from engineering consultants, procurement, estimating, scheduling, and other stakeholders.
• Lead development of the 10% substation design, including single-line diagrams and general arrangements.
• Coordinate with estimating and scheduling to align design, scope, and schedule.
• Review estimates for technical completeness and identify gaps, exclusions, and contingencies.
• Deliver the owner reviewed preliminary design to estimating and BD per stage-gate schedule.
• Prepare and issue proposals to EORs and engineering subcontractors, including NERC support and metering as required.
• Prepare the engineering scope, proposal information, schedule inputs, and handoff details for Preconstruction Engineering.
• Support handoff with RFIs, client comments, and procurement constraints.
• Quality assurance: review preliminary deliverables for alignment with all requirements; propose constructive alternatives.
• Mentor junior team members and identify training needs related to substation design and handoff.
