Job summary

SOLV Energy, Inc. is seeking a Design Engineer II, Substation to own preliminary design for utility-scale solar and BESS projects. You will coordinate with engineering consultants, procurement, and estimating to shape the 10% design and ensure alignment with schedule and commercial assumptions.

You will review client documents, manage risks, and liaise with internal and external stakeholders to drive timely handoffs to Preconstruction Engineering while mentoring junior team members.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of 3+ years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and ETAP or similar design software.
• Strong understanding of substation design principles, protection schemes, and industry standards (IEEE, NEC, NESC).
• Familiarity with utility interconnection requirements and contract language.
• Knowledge of applicable building codes and engineering practices.
• Ability to travel up to 10%.

Responsibilities

• Own the first-pass preliminary substation design approach for assigned pursuits and projects, defining design basis and items for the 10% design deliverable.
• Review client documents, technical exhibits, PPAs, interconnection agreements, and standards to identify requirements, risks, and scope.
• Serve as primary substation design SME coordinating inputs from engineering consultants, procurement, estimating, scheduling, and other specialists.
• Lead development of the 10% substation design including SLDs and general arrangement drawings for estimating.
• Coordinate with estimating and scheduling to align design, quantities, scope narrative, and commercial assumptions.
• Review estimates for technical completeness and identify gaps, exclusions, and open items.
• Deliver the owner-reviewed preliminary design to estimating and BD per project stage-gate schedule.
• Participate in client meetings to review exhibits, explain design assumptions, identify risks, and clarify requirements.
• Support contractual exhibit reviews, markups, and technical responses to facilitate LNTP, escalating risks.
• Communicate design decisions, open items, risks, and inputs clearly to stakeholders.
• Prepare and issue proposal information to EORs and engineering subcontractors, including NERC support and metering.
• Align proposals with scope, estimate, schedule, LNTP requirements, and handoff to stakeholders.
• Prepare engineering scope, proposal info, schedule inputs, and handoff details for Preconstruction Engineering.
